London Eye vs. the Shard

The London Eye and the View from the Shard are two of the most popular attractions to visit in London. They both take you really, REALLY high up and give you amazing views of the city and beyond.

Because of this, the questions we’re asked again and again are “Which one is better?” and “What are the differences between a flight on the London Eye and a trip to the top of The Shard?”

Of course, it’s all down to personal preference. So here are some of the key facts to help you decide which one to visit!

1. Which is Taller?

Both attractions are record breakers. The London Eye reaches an impressive height of 135 metres and is the tallest observation wheel in the world! The Shard on the other hand is the tallest building in Western Europe. Its observation deck “The View from the Shard” is a massive 244 metres above ground…. that’s 800ft!

2. What are the views like?

From the highest point on the London Eye you can see for around 40km (or 25 miles) over London. At The View from the Shard you can potentially see up to 40 miles on a clear day – that covers the whole city!

Both attractions allow you to see a number of famous London landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Big Ben and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

3. How long will it take?

  • A full rotation of the London Eye takes approximately half an hour.
  • Once you’re inside the View from the Shard there’s no time limits which means you can spend as long as you like admiring the views.

4. Are there any gift shops?

The Sky Boutique on level 68 of the Shard is the highest shop in London! Here you can purchase all kinds of gifts including guidebooks and champagne. The London Eye also has a gift shop located next to the wheel which sells London Eye-themed gifts and souvenirs.

5. What else can I do while I’m up there?

The View from the Shard has its own “Tell:scopes” which you can look through to see 1000s of years of London’s historical views – very educational if you’re planning on taking the kids! It also has its own App (available to download through iTunes), which allows you to see the history of different buildings and create your own postcard!

On some evenings The View from the Shard also hosts a number of special events, including yoga and even a silent disco.

The London Eye has a Champagne Experience ticket which makes for a nice addition if you’re celebrating a special occasion (it’s also a great place to propose as you get to the top!) You can also hire out your own private capsule for a gourmet 3-course meal or even hold your wedding there!

Special experiences are also available at the London Eye throughout the year, such as mulled wine at Christmas and champagne and chocolates around Valentine’s Day!
