Getting Around in Paris

Bus
  • Buses in Paris operate between 5.45am and 12.30am, Monday to Saturday. On Sundays and public holidays the services are much less frequent
  • Night buses depart approximately every hour between 12.30am and 5.30am.
Car
  • Driving in Paris is probably more hassle than it’s worth given the excellent public transport systems. Car hire is expensive and parking space is limited.
  • If you do need to drive, you’ll find most of the larger car rental companies throughout the city, including the airport and main train stations.
Metro
  • Paris’ metro system is efficient, inexpensive and spans every part of the city. Each metro train is known by the name of its terminus.
  • Trains usually start at around 5.30am, with the last train departing between 12.35am and 1am, or 2.15am on Fridays and Saturdays.
RER
  • The Paris RER is 5 express train lines which connect the city centre to surrounding suburbs.
  • It also connects Paris to popular destinations including CDG Airport and Disneyland Paris.
  • The RER is faster than the metro, but the stops are much further apart. However, some Paris attractions, particularly those on the Left Bank, are easier to reach by the RER than by metro.
Bike
  • The inexpensive, self-service bike scheme “Vélib'” (www.velib.paris.fr) is a huge success in Paris. As most of the city’s sights are spread across a distance of no more than 10km, it’s easy, fun, and eco-friendly to explore by bike!
  • How it works: Simply pick up a bike from one of the roadside Vélib’ stations – there’s one every 300m or so – cycle wherever you like, and return it outside another.
  • Bikes are available 24 hours a day. You can open a Vélib’ account at any station using any major credit card.

Known as the “City of Love” and also the “City of Lights”, the allure of France’s capital isn’t just due to the number of wonderful things to do in Paris, but the ambience of the city itself.

There’s a Paris for every season, whether it’s cosying up in a cafe in winter, strolling through the leafy parks in Autumn, opting for some Seine-side beach relaxation in the sizzling summers or shopping up a storm…. well, anytime!

Art, culture, history, food, drink, nightlife and romance – this is a city that truly has everything! Check out the guides and tips above for our recommendations on Paris attractions.
