What is Chichen Itza?

Chichen Itza is an ancient city in Mexico that is best known for its large pyramids. It is considered to be one of the 7 Wonders of the New World.

Where is Chichen Itza?

Chichen Itza is located on the Yucatan Peninsula in the east of Mexico.

Who built Chichen Itza?

Chichen Itza was built by the Maya people, an ancient civilisation who developed the science of astronomy, calendar systems and hieroglyphic writing.

When was it built?

Many of its greatest buildings were built during the Classic Period: 625 – 800 A.D.

What does “Chichen Itza” mean?

“Chichen Itza” means ‘at the mouth of the well of the Itza’.

Did you know?

On certain dates in spring and autumn, the position of the sun on the great pyramid causes shadows that look like a huge serpent slithering down its north staircase!
