Loch Lomond, the Highlands and Doune Castle

See Scotland’s dazzling beauty and variety as you travel from a busy hub of modern industry to some of Scotland’s most breathtaking natural views. From Glasgow to Bannockburn, you’ll see the country’s history from the present day to the 1300s.

Choose a ramble or even a boat trip when you stop on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. This is Britain’s largest stretch of water and has been a place for artists and poets to reflect for centuries. The Loch is a part of a National Park that includes the Trossachs; with its rolling glens, purple heather and tall mountains, it’s known as the ‘Highlands in Miniature’.

The village of Aberfoyle, the place where the tour stops for lunch, is the place where celebrated writer Sir Walter Scott dreamt up inspiration for his novels and poetry. Even the makers of ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ found themselves falling for the landscape – they used nearby Doune Castle, built in the 14th century, for many different locations in the film.

After lunch, you’ll head to Stirling where you can either visit the castle or spend an hour taking in the views, including the 200-foot tall monument of William Wallace or ‘Braveheart’. He might be happy to see where you travel past next – Bannockburn, where Robert the Bruce beat the English in battle during the 1300s.

You’ll also pass Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of the tragic Mary Queen of Scots. On your drive back, you’ll be played relaxing music suitable for Scots returning home!
