Rome Crypts & Catacombs Tour – Full Details

Peel back the layers of history on the Rome Crypts and Catacombs Tour!

Visit the Capuchin Crypt, an eerie chapel hidden in the centre of Rome, which is decorated with the bones of 4000 Capuchin monks.

In this dark chamber, where the chandeliers are hewn from human vertebrae, you’ll read the message left many centuries ago by the monks whose bones line the walls…’What you are now, we once were. What we are now, you will be.’

The recent addition of the official museum above the Capuchin Crypt gives you the opportunity to see the relics of the life of St Francis and the magnificent Caravaggio canvas, “St Francis in Meditation”.

Your tour also take in the descending layers of the 14th century Basilica San Clemente, referred to by some as “the lasagne”, which was built over a 4th century basilica, built on top of a 2nd century chapel, built over a 1st century Roman street!

You’ll also visit the San Domitilla or San Callisto Catacombs on this fascinating tour, which takes you back to a time when Christianity was illegal in the city and the dark, damp tunnels below were a rare sanctuary from persecution for worshippers.
