Explore one of Iceland’s longest lava tunnels

Enter the magnificent lava tunnel of Raufarhólshellir - up to 30m wide and 10m high, it’s one of the biggest in Iceland! Find out what it’s like to walk in the path of a volcanic eruption, as you descend into a tunnel carved by burning lava more than 5000 years ago.

Marvel at the stunning colours inside the tube

One of the tunnel’s highlights is the area where the ceiling has caved in. There, columns of light come through and shane on the vivid palette of colours caused by the different mineral types in the rock. It’s a truly fascinating sight!

Discovering the lava tunnel made easy

  • You don’t have to be fit to visit the tunnel –  a footbridge has been built for easy access
  • Protective helmet & flashlight included for extra safety
  • The tour is fully guided – spend 1 hour inside the cave with a seasoned expert and learn about the geological history of Iceland
  • It’s only a short drive from Reykjavík -  the lava tunnel is only 30 minutes away from the capital
  • Return transport included – That’s right! We’ll take care of taking you to the lava tunnel and back

Choose between a morning & afternoon tour

Plan your time the way that suits you best – decide whether you want to visit the lava tunnel in the morning or in the afternoon. 9am and 1pm departures available!

Don’t forget to wear warm clothes & sturdy shoes

It can get cold and slippery underground, so make sure you wear stable walking shoes and lots of warm, layered clothing!

Make the most of your time in Iceland on our MUST do combo tour:

Begin the day with witnessing the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while we walk in the path of a lava that flowed thousands of years ago. The lava tunnel is one of the biggest in Iceland and gets up to 30 metres wide and 10 metres high. The lava tube ceiling has caved in near the entrance, which creates beautiful columns of light. The fantastic range of colours of the tunnel wall is caused by the different mineral types of the rock.

This is a tour for the senses. Experience a new world, hear the talk of the cave and sense the forces of nature like you have never done before. Learn new things and step out of your comfort zone. Scenes from the Hollywood movie Noah, with Anthony Hopkins, were shot in this lava cave.

After the tour we drive back to Reykjavík where you have one and a half hour before the next tour departs. This gives you time to take a stroll downtown or have a picnic by the pond, which is only a short walk away from BSÍ Bus Terminal.

The next tour takes you to three of Iceland’s most stunning sights; Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and Þingvellir National Park.

The Geysir geothermal area boasts spouting springs, including Strokkur, the most active geyser in Iceland. All geysers in the world get their name from the now mostly dormant Geysir hot spring, from which the area also gets its name. At Gullfoss you are given the opportunity to stand next to the amazing waterfall, watching enormous quantities of water tumble violently into a deep, meandering gorge.
