A £600 Million Historical Theme Park Could Be Coming to Oxfordshire!
Get ready, history lovers and theme park fans, something spectacular might soon land in Oxfordshire!
Puy du Fou, the much-loved French theme park known for its jaw-dropping live shows and immersive storytelling, has submitted plans to build a brand-new £600 million attraction near Bicester. If approved, this would be the first-ever Puy du Fou park in the UK, bringing centuries of British history to life like never before.
What is Puy du Fou?
If you haven’t heard of it yet, Puy du Fou is a global sensation. Founded in France in 1978, it’s now the second most popular theme park in France after Disneyland® Paris, welcoming more than 2.5 million visitors each year. In 2021, the company expanded to Spain with a park in Toledo—and now, Britain is next on the list.
Unlike traditional theme parks, Puy du Fou doesn’t rely on rollercoasters or thrill rides. Instead, it’s all about immersive, history-themed experiences, with grand live shows, incredible stunts, detailed reconstructions, and villages that transport you back in time. Think epic battles, knights, Vikings, and legendary British moments—brought to life on stage and in the open air.
The Plans for Oxfordshire
According to the outline planning application submitted to Cherwell District Council, the park will include:
– Four period villages inspired by different moments in British history
– 13 live shows, from large-scale outdoor spectacles to intimate performances
– Three themed hotels, each reflecting a different era
– A conference centre
– New lakes, gardens and 40 acres of wildflower meadows, plus 20,000 new trees
If given the green light, the park will open in phases starting in 2029, welcoming visitors between April and October each year.
Big Boost for the Local Area
Puy du Fou isn’t just about entertainment—it’s also set to be a major boost for the Oxfordshire economy. Plans suggest the park will:
– Create around 2,000 direct jobs and 6,000 in hospitality services
– Generate an estimated £500 million boost to the local economy
– Welcome 550,000 visitors in its first year, growing to 1.47 million once fully developed
And with sustainability in mind, at least half of daytime visitors will be encouraged to arrive by public transport, with free shuttle buses planned from nearby stations.
“Bringing Britain’s History to Life”
Olivier Strebelle, CEO of Puy du Fou, shared his excitement about the project:
“We have wanted to come to the UK for many years. Britain has such a rich, colourful and exciting history, and the site we have chosen near Bicester is the ideal location to create a world-class destination that will bring that history to life.”
He also emphasised that the park will put environment and sustainability at its heart, from the landscaping to the transport plans.
When Can You Visit?
While the park is still awaiting approval, if all goes well you could be stepping into the past as soon as 2029. Imagine strolling through a medieval village, watching knights clash in battle, or staying in a hotel designed around British history—it’s going to be an unforgettable addition to UK attractions.
With a £600 million investment, world-class storytelling, and a passion for history, Puy du Fou Oxfordshire could be one of the most exciting theme park openings this decade. Watch this space!
