Northern Lights Tour

Witness the Northern Lights, one of nature’s most spectacular displays, on the magical, mystical Northern Lights Tour which takes you on the hunt for the elusive Aurora Borealis!

During the Northern Lights Tour, which occurs on clear winter nights and takes you far away from the glow of modern city lighting, you can often see the magnificent Aurora Borealis as it swirls and dances across the skies in a wild pattern of shapes and colours.

Before the start of the Northern Lights Tour, the supplier will check the local weather forecasts to decide which part of south western Iceland offers the best possibility of seeing the Lights.

However, nature is an unpredictable law unto herself, therefore if the night you’ve chosen to see the Northern Lights is unsuitable due to weather conditions, a decision will be made by 6pm whether or not the tour will take place.

Local guesthouses and hotels are aware of the unpredictability of the Northern Lights and will be kept informed by email. Please contact your hotel front desk, or the Tour Desk at the Loftleidir, Hilton or Saga Hotel, to find out if your tour will be operating that evening.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Saw the lights in January! We were lucky enough to see the Northern lights on our short trip in January. After being picked up by the coach, we arrived at a popular viewing area that was away from the city lights which was one of the best places to see the Northern lights. After a lot of waiting around in the cold, they finally appeared and you could hear the crowd gasp! Make sure you wrap up warm (thick blankets for the winter as you’ll be standing still for a long time) and consider bringing binoculars to see the lights ‘dancing’!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Magical We booked our Northern Lights tour for the first day of our holiday, however it was cancelled due to bad weather. We phoned the tour operator the next day and they re-booked us for the day after when the weather was meant to be clearer. The coach took us to a spot just outside Reykjavik where the lights were most likely to appear. There’s no guarantee that you’ll get to see them, however we were very lucky as after around an hour of waiting they showed up in the sky. It was magical and something I'll remember forever. If you want to take photos of the lights you’ll need a decent camera and a tripod, as mobile phone cameras can’t pick them up very well. Make sure you wrap up warm too as you’ll be stood outside for a while waiting for the lights to appear. I wore 5 layers and was still freezing!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Experience even without the lights! We booked this experience with obviously the idea of seeing this fantastic lights show in the sky, unfortunately we didn't get to see them as the weather conditions weren't the best. Due to bad planning on my part we couldn't go again the next night as it was our last night in Iceland but if you were better at planning than me you can then hopefully experience the Northern Lights the following night for free, which i think is a brilliant feature. What i can say is that the guide couldn't have better and was very entertaining. Make sure you do wrap up warm though if you get out to see the lights as it can obviously get very cold at night!
