The History
Jan and Per Broman, two brothers from Sweden, were practically raised in the captivating realm of photography. Their childhood was steeped in the art form, thanks to their father who worked as a darkroom manager for a newspaper. Their home even boasted its own darkroom, fostering a deep-seated love for capturing and developing images from an early age. This affection for photography blossomed into a lifelong passion.
In 2010, fueled by their unwavering dedication to the craft, the Broman brothers embarked on a remarkable journey—they founded the Fotografiska Museum in the heart of Stockholm. Their vision was clear: to ignite a sense of awareness and consciousness in the world through the compelling medium of photography. Their endeavor was met with resounding success, drawing crowds and accolades alike.
Driven by their ambition to extend this impact beyond the borders of their homeland, the brothers expanded their venture. First, they ventured to Tallinn, Estonia, spreading the magic of Fotografiska across the Baltic Sea. And then, crossing the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, they set their sights on the bustling metropolis of New York City.
Nestled in the vibrant Flatiron District, Fotografiska New York sits in a historic edifice dating back to 1894. This architectural gem, once known as the Church Missions House, exudes the timeless elegance of Renaissance Revival design. Recognized as a registered New York City landmark, it provides a breathtaking backdrop for Fotografiska New York's multifaceted offerings.
Today, Fotografiska New York stands as a beacon of artistic expression, a sanctuary where the power of imagery transcends boundaries and captivates hearts and minds alike. Through its six floors of immersive exhibits and dynamic programming, it continues the Broman brothers' legacy of inspiring a more enlightened world—one photograph at a time.
