Wartime London - Morning Tour "The City"
Wartime London - Morning Tour “The City”- Intro
During the fascinating half-day Wartime London Tour, learn how St Paul’s Cathedral became an icon of defiance, how a poorly placed bomb drop changed the course of history and how London took the brunt of the bombing during the Hitler’s terrifying 76-day campaign that was to become known as the Blitz!
Wartime London - Morning Tour “The City”– Full Details
The Wartime London Tour takes place on a genuine 1930’s or 40’s bus in the company of a knowledgeable, professional guide. A complimentary London pictorial guide shows many of the sites you’ll visit as they were during the war, providing a fascinating ‘Then and Now’ comparison.
You’ll begin at Victoria, travelling towards the City, passing through the Embankment and Parliament Square along the way.
As you approach the City, you’ll take a closer look at the site of one of the worst V1 incidents at The Aldwych, along with the RAF Central Church which still bears the scars of wartime bomb damage.
Moving deeper into the City, you’ll see how parts of Roman London were uncovered by the destruction, churches that never recovered and remain in ruins to this day and the site where the first wartime bombs landed on London.
The Wartime London Tour continues to the site of one of the largest bomb craters in London which was easily big enough to swallow a double-decker bus!
As you cross London Bridge, compare the modern skyline of London’s Docklands area to the way it looked during the height of the Blitz campaign.
During the tour, you’ll also see the site of one of London’s most tragic air raid shelter disasters, and hear how the remarkable saving of St Paul’s Cathedral by two brave bomb disposal experts had a dramatic affect on the moral of the public.
At this point, you are free to enjoy a one-hour guided tour to the Imperial War Museum or visit at your own pace.
On the journey back to Victoria Train Station for the end of the tour, you’ll see remains of London’s Emergency Water Supply system, which, although designed to cope with fires, had dramatic unforeseen side effects.
